First Impressions of Toy Story Land
Walt Disney World is continuing its tradition of a themed park within a park, with its new Disney Pixar Toy Story Land. The themed lands focus on the Pixar movie franchise to the smallest details, or in this particular land, the “largest details”. Toy Story Land is where the guests are considered “toy size”.
In true Disney Imagineer expertise, the magic is in the details. Have a rest on park benches designed like popsicle sticks, Lincoln logs or tinker toys. Walk in Andy's giant footsteps and feel what it’s like to be toy-sized. Enjoy the welcome from Jessie and Woody, with piped in voices, if you can hear over the excitement of the guests. The antics of the green army men characters are much more interactive with the guests, including talking with them, making the experience seem even more realistic.
So, what about the rides? Slinky Dog Dash is a winner, but Alien Swirling Saucers is the definition of a child's ride. It is like a mini scrambler that is missing half of its scramble. It is a very cute ride and is more exciting than some of the other kiddie rides around Walt Disney World like Na'vi River Journey. But it is lacking the whirling, spinning excitement like you find on the teacup ride or Primeval Whirl. Alien Saucer t flings you from side to side every now and then but nothing like a true scrambler type of ride. It has two loading zones which helps with keeping the line down to an okay wait time (a year from now, my guess is you will be seeing a lot of these as 4th and 5th fastpasses of the day). I would give it the same excitement level as the Barnstormer in Magic Kingdom.
Slinky Dog Dash is a welcome addition to Hollywood studios. It is a classic Disney coaster that is exciting but doesn't have the loops or rolls that Rock 'n' Roller Coaster features. It is a great ride for the family assuming everyone is over 38 inches. The excitement to intensity ratio is much higher in excitement than it is in intensity. If you are an adrenaline junkie type of roller coaster rider, this coaster will not fulfill that need.
Toy Story Mania Finally gets the entrance it deserves. Considering this was/is the headliner of Hollywood Studios for years, it sure felt like it's previous entrance was an afterthought. Now it gets to be the center of attention with a truly beautiful façade! It is fun, inviting and bright and best of all with it being in the same tier as Slinky Dog Dash and Alien Swirling Saucers it is easy to get fastpasses. It is the same great ride, with a terrific themed queue.
It wouldn’t be a visit to Toy Story Land without a stop at Woody's Lunch Box. I find this quick serve to be a step above the rest at Hollywood Studios, but is not as good as the new Satu'li Canteen in Pandora or most of the quick serves in the Epcot World Showcase. The food has good choices for breakfast and lunch, but it’s pretty light on dinner, even for a quick-serve. The breakfast menu is pictured below. The tomato-basil soup is better than the potato barrel at least value wise, but who doesn't love tater tots, so you can’t go wrong with either choice. Mobile ordering was definitely the way to go, there were tons of people in line and I walked right by them since I ordered from the comfort of my room and then headed over to Toy Story Land.
I love the direction Walt Disney World is taking with these themed lands, The World of Avatar, Toy Story Land and who can wait for Star Wars, Galaxy’s Edge! The excitement continues…
The Highlight of the day was definitely the popcorn bucket. I mean look at him he is adorable. This is my favorite popcorn bucket to date and one of the best built ones they have had, he is nice and sturdy.
